BreadHive Bakery & Cafe

Since 2014 we've been passionate about creating delicious bread. At our cafe you'll find hearty sandwiches featuring our bread, bagels and pretzels alongside cookies, soup and afternoon small plates. As a worker cooperative, we are Buffalo's only worker-owned eatery! Which means that the person who made your sandwich, baked your bagels, rang you up or delivered the day's bread might just own the business. And we'd love to have you over for lunch.

The bungalow-like space brightens a bare block on low-slung Connecticut Street. At breakfast, customers linger over intensely flavorful sourdough or multigrain bagels — balanced between New York airiness and a Montreal-style chew — or treats like blueberry-lavender pecan muffins, made with organic barley flour.
— The New York Times
All of this bakery’s breads, bagels and pretzels are based on wild yeast sourdough starter. After doughs are mixed, a day of slow fermentation aids flavor and digestibility. The hand-rolled baguette emerges from the oven crackly-crusted.

So many tales of successful entrepreneurs start with the desire to do what they love, even if it means working longer hours and on weekends — or having to completely start from scratch and invent and build your own job from the ground floor up. Out of Buffalo, NY, the ladies behind BreadHive did just that.
